Google has announced googlebooksA new series of premium laptops that run on an Android-based operating system instead of ChromeOS. These devices will feature Gemini AI integrated into the entire system. The laptops are set to launch later this year through partnerships with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Google has not revealed pricing details.
Positioned above the existing Chromebook lineup, which currently $200 to $500 In the US, Google aims to enter the premium consumer laptop market, which is largely dominated by Windows and macOS devices.
Googlebooks OS and Gemini AI integration
Google Books runs an operating system that Google describes as a combination of ChromeOS and Android. The Android codebase serves as the core, the plan for which was confirmed by Android chief Sameer Sama last year.
Gemini AI is integrated directly into the OS instead of running as a separate app. The demonstration by Alexander Kusher, Google’s senior director of laptops and tablets, included features like the Magic Pointer. This tool activates when the cursor moves and displays relevant AI suggestions based on what is hovered over. For example, hovering over a date in an email brings up options to view the schedule, draft a reply, or suggest a meeting location via Google Maps.
Another feature is the drag-and-drop image composition, which allows users to select multiple images and generate a composite without opening a separate AI tool. The system also supports Android apps, which run in their native portrait format on the desktop, similar to Apple’s iPhone mirroring.
Google has not commented on whether user photos or other content processed by these AI features could be used for training.
Googlebooks hardware, Chromebook questions, and other Google I/O announcements
Google describes the laptop as being built with “Premium craftsmanship and materials” By its partner manufacturers. The lid has a Google-branded glowbar.
